WHAT WE DO - HUMAN STUDY UK

Established in 2020, Human Study UK is a UK registered charity and sister organization to Human Study e.V. We share the same mission, vision and values.

Our first project was to deliver Prosthetics & Orthotics training in Syria. The multiple challenges in Syria include landmine pollution, large numbers of new amputees, lack of infrastructure and lack of access to P&O services for people with disabilities.

Working in extremely challenging conditions for both students and trainers, Human Study delivered training for 30 Associate Prosthetist/Orthotists, as the first step in building sustainable services for the growing numbers of people with disabilities in Syria. In a world first, we translated our training materials into Arabic, to reduce the language barrier for students and to create a valuable resource for the region.

Thanks to the generous support of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, Human Study UK enabled seven Associate Prosthetist/Orthotists to complete Human Study’s Bachelor’s Degree Train the Trainer program and upskill to become teachers.

The ongoing conflict meant that we had to deliver our practical training over the border in Turkey. The students who could travel across the border attended the practical workshops, then went back into Syria to deliver the training to their colleagues.

Two of our Bachelor’s graduates have now joined Human Study’s team of international trainers, further increasing the impact of their education as they deliver P&O training in other countries around the world.

Luai Alhallaak is one of our talented Bachelor’s degree graduates. Luai joined the P&O profession when conflict broke out in Syria.

“I was shocked to witness the impact of the war on my village. Multiple refugees, amputees and people who had been paralyzed… huge numbers of traumatic cases. This made me want a medical job to help.”

There is an urgent need to train more P&O professionals, in more countries around the world where people with disabilities are facing poverty and social exclusion. You can help – by making a donation, volunteering or partnering with us.
